Season 2 :: Week 2

I'm not gonna lie.  I'm pretty shocked myself that we've not only MADE pies two weeks in a row, but we've also BLOGGED two weeks in a row now.  This week, I made a lemon cream pie, and Andrea made a blueberry pie.  Tonight's league involved sabotage, TBS, too much flour, and too little pie crust.  Let's begin.

Beth Vs Lemon Cream Pie

I originally wanted to make a lemon meringue pie, but when I suggested this to my co-workers, (who are the ones who eat the pie) they all gave me a look that said, "meringue, really?"  I then discovered no one really likes meringue, so when I suggested a lemon cream pie, I got a MUCH better response.  Andrea claims I'm wimping out and she's disappointed in my lack of commitment with the meringue.  I think I'm just giving the people what they want.  To each his own.

 I forgot to take some step-by-step pictures again with this pie, but it was super easy.  I made my pie crust, then beat together some eggs, sweetened condensed milk, and lemon juice.  I poured the mixture into the pie crust and baked it and that was it!  Very easy pie this week.  We took the pictures before I put the whipped cream on top.  I did not want to put the whipped cream on until morning, when I take it to work.  We did taste test it though, and it was pretty good!  Tart, but good!  Week 2 Lemon Cream Pie was a success!

Andrea Vs. Blueberry Pie

Tonight I wanted to make a blueberry pie.  If you remember, I made the blueberry my first week in Pie League Season 1.  It was just ok.  This time, it was DELICIOUS!  Beth's husband says it was better than hers, and that's the first time he's ever said that.

Here's my only step-by-step of my pie.  I had a few set backs along the way, which made the end product even sweeter.  First, I put WAY too much flour on the table while rolling out the dough.  Then, I rolled out the dough paper thin.  But, I just went with it even though Beth made one of her smart ass remarks, (I won't even tell you what she said about my air vents.)
This picture is the only step-by-step of Beth making the lemon cream pie.  Andrea couldn't rotate it, and then couldn't delete it from the blog.  So here it is.  Turn your computer or turn your head.  Or don't.  Enjoy.
P.S. This is Andrea.  It's not like you fixed it, Beth.

And We're Back: The Sequel

Okay, so we realize that we've said this before (see previous post), but this time we probably really mean it.  Well, we're back! After a year and a half hiatus from Pie League, a lot has changed.  The last time we talked, Beth was still pregnant, and Andrea was still engaged.  Well, Beth's "baby" is now 15 months old, and Andrea has a new last name.  It was a bit of a challenge to start up Pie League last fall, with a demanding baby.  So instead Pie League became "Hang Out and Look at Beth's Cute Baby League."  After a long break, we've decided to give another try.  With a toddler running around the kitchen.  We'll see.
Tonight, we thought it would be best to start off easy, nothing too challenging.  So, Beth went with tried and true Strawberry Rhubarb and Andrea, went with peach.  Not sure why peach, since the last time, it turned out somewhat garbage-y.  See Week 2

Beth vs. Strawberry Rhubarb
After asking what she would like to say about her pie tonight, she replied, with a nonchalant shrug, "I rocked it out again.  What can I say?"  And she was serious.  Enough said.

Andrea vs. Peach

Sigh.  I don't have a lot to say for myself.  After two years of making pies, I have NOT gotten any better.  And I'M serious.  To start things off, it turns out that I forgot to check the lard's expiration date until after I put it in the oven.  I mean, it's animal fat.  DOES it really expire?  Well, I got to thinking, that's been in Beth's fridge a long time.  So I had her check it.  Sell by October 2011.  Damn.  That was a year ago. I guess I won't be feeding this one to anyone.  Unless you like living on the edge........

The crust is way too light in color again.  Same as Week 2.  We haven't tasted the inside yet.  But I'm willing to bet, it's going the same route as the disaster that is the crust.  I'd like to say, maybe I'll have better luck next week, but after 2 years, we all know that's probably not going to happen.

Little Andrew had a great time "helping" us in the kitchen!  Pie League looks a little bit different this year, but it worked!
